Self-Storage is used by almost everyone from renters looking to store their excess personal items to home owners needing more space to store their household goods to businesses needing space to store their records.  Though self-storage are not created equally and may vary a great deal in terms of price, square footage and features, there are a few basic things that you should know about storage units before renting one locally.

Storage units come in many sizes ranging from small lockers to more typical storage units that start at 5' x 5' (25 square feet) to a medium unit 10' x 15' (150 square feet) to a larger unit of 10' x 30' (300 square feet) with ceiling heights between 8 to 10 feet high.

Here are a few self-storage options that you should consider before renting a storage unit:

  1. Climate controlled storage - By setting the storage unit at an ideal level of temperature and humidity, you keep your stored items in excellent condition that could be damagedby temperature/ humidity variations.
  2. 24-hour access - Enable you to visit your self-storage unit unlimited times as needed.  Basically you can access your storege unit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without the assistant of a storage facility staff member. No notice is required, so this type of self-storage option gives you all the freedom and flexibility that you may need when storing your household goods in storage.
  3. Drive-up access - Drive-up storage units enables you to access your stored items easily and conveniently.  You just drive up to your unit and unload your boxes directly to our storage unit.  Also, some storage facilities have storage units equipped with outlets and have electricity in every single unit.

You can usually rent self-storage units on a month-to-month basis depending on your needs whether it is short or long term.  There is no obligation to rent a unit for longer than one month.  It all depends on you and your storage needs.  Upon signing your lease agreement you will have access to your storage unit during office or access hours.  Most self-storage facilities charge a one-time administration fee upon signing the lease agreement.  In addition to an administrative fee, storage facilities will also require that your stored goods are insured with some type of insurance whether you get it through the storage facility or insured it through your homeowner's policy.  When the time comes when you obtain a storage unit, you might want to ask one of the staff members at the storage facility or call your insurance company to see if the policy you have will cover our stored items.
